It's called the SP (Special Project I guess) America, and it's supposed to be the Targa Version of the F12. Looks good so far, far better than the strange red/white FF one off for Japan.

Damn it I need to be a Wall Street tycoon or a third world dictator so I can order one-off V12 Ferrari targas

So basically a new Superamerica.
BTW...
Jim Glickenhaus' P4-5, and Eric Clapton's SP12-EC are also SP projects... Special Production is a division of Ferrari/Pininfarina that builds one-off cars for people with more money than some third world countries' GDP, and can afford to foot the bill for a fully custom coach built Ferrari with corporate backing, from current Ferrari chassis and drivetrain platforms.

I would have to see it in person but, so far, I don't like it at all. Ofcourse, I'm also the type of person who thinks the F430 is better looking than the 458.
![]() 04/21/2014 at 19:30 |

I really like the way that looks, actually. Almost as good as Eric Clapton's 458-turned-BB tribute car. So sexy.

I know someone who is going to be veeeeeerrrryyyyyy peeved if this is called a Superamerica. A client of my grandfather's, who is well known as one of the most famous car collectors in the U.S. (obviously not Jay Leno status, but still), apparently owns one of every Superamerica to date including the one-off Superamerica 45, which was based off of the 599 and even has his initials in various places around the car... Which is freaking awesome if you ask me. He might be a tad cross if he can't get his hands on the next one.
Here's the 45 for reference:
and here's his one-off 612 Kappa because I found a cool picture of it:

Although there is the excitement of it being a Ferrari, I just find it too busy for my liking. Its probably just me but 3 hood scoops are 3 too much IMHO (Not including the ones in the corner of the headlights).
![]() 04/22/2014 at 11:47 |

So your grandfather's client was Peter Kalikow? We know him here in NYC as former Chairman of the MTA - and it was just as broken back then as well. I saw his 400 Superamerica last year.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 11:48 |

I totally agree with you on the 430 over the 458. I got to see both up close at a recent event. The 458 is really nice but looks huge compared to the tidy proportions of the 430.

I don't make 10m/year. But even if I did, I don't think I would ever own a Ferrari of this type or any other. Maybe a used one. I'd rather rent one and spend the money on vacations and investments.

That's because it does. The Speciale is the best looking 458 IMO but the 430 Scud is a gorgeous, gorgeous car.. which the 458 is not.

But seriously, the F430 is one of the most beautiful car and hands down best looking Ferrari (then the Enzo, then LaFerrari)

Is the only difference between the Superamerica 45 and the Aperta that the Aperta is based off the standard 599 while the 45 is based off a 599 GTO?

I thought Glickenhaus' P4/5 was built independently of Ferrari? I think it was essentially a (very extensive) Pininfarina rebody project of an Enzo?
![]() 04/22/2014 at 12:39 |
|
True. P 4/5 became Ferrari P 4/5 by Pininfarina after it was done and Luca saw it.

Really? I really like it but to each their own.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 12:50 |

It's not called the Superamerica, it's called the SP America.
And I think Mr. Kalikow will be just fine, even if they do use the Superamerica name.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 12:52 |
|
Nope. Glickenhaus' car is not an SP, it was made before the SP department was created within Ferrari, and it was only named a Ferrari because Luca di Montezemolo really couldn't deny the car had Ferrari DNA all over it. It was a project done entirely by Pininfarina & Jim Glickenhaus.

What did they do to the front? It's like they tried to mix it with a Ferrari 250 GTO but ended up turning it into a fake LFA. I'm not a fan of the giant grins on current Ferraris (the FF looks especially silly in person with the silver horizontal slats), but this is horrible.

![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:14 |

I'm with you on the 430 vs 458. There is a limit on how low and wide a car should be... the 458 and C7 go too far.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:19 |
|
Oh well it being low and wide is actually not my problem with it. For instance, an LP670 is much wider and just as low as the 458 but I think it still looks terrific.
My main problem with the 458 is its ugly face.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:27 |
|
I agree.. I think the front of the 458 is not good looking at all. I'll admit though that the arse on the 458 is amazing
![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:33 |
|
Disagree, re: 458/430, but I would agree that the 599 looks better than the F12, 550/575 better than the 599.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:42 |

huh? there are muuuuuch wider cars than the 458 and c7. The c7 isn't even that wide.

![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:57 |

I think the F430 Stradale looks better than the 458 Speciale, but the "base" 458 is probably one of the best looking cars to come from Ferrari.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 13:59 |
|
Do you mean the 430 Scuderia?
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:02 |
|
Yup. Still is. I was trying to avoid name dropping, but I guess naming two one-off Ferraris kind of defeated the point. My grandfather owns a shop in CT called Automotive Restorations Inc. and they service and restore most, if not all, of Mr. Kalikow's cars. His 400 is stunning, but my personal favorite of his might be his California.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:03 |
|
I'm willing to bet this belongs to the same fella.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:04 |
|
Very. It might be my favorite car of his.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:07 |
|
I mean, when you've built up a collection like his, which includes an SA that Ferrari made for him (not that he had Ferrari make. Ferrari made it for him ) you have the right to want to continue to build the collection. If I was in his position, I might be a little irked that someone else had the final piece to my collection. Just saying.
And hey, if you have the money who cares?
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:10 |
|
Thats likely not the final name though. All Ferrari special projects are named SP-whatevers. I'm pretty sure James Glickenhaus's P4/5 started out as an SP as well, but was given the P4/5 name later.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:11 |

Uhm, honestly I don't really know. That sounds about right, though. Lets go with that.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:12 |

It might. I haven't heard any rumors about it though and I initially read the text under the photo above as it's being built for someone in Japan so I assumed it wasn't him.

The 430 Scuderia is an AMAZING car...until you have to drive it on regular roads and/or in traffic for more than 30 minutes.

|
Yeah, but, 250.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 14:54 |
|
Huh well I didn't think it was that bad the last time I drove one. Do you own one?
![]() 04/22/2014 at 16:15 |
|
Nope...wouldn't want to. As I appreciate what they are like on a race track, the time I would spend in one on regular roads would outweigh the time on a track. If I want a track-only car, I'd buy such.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 16:36 |
|
Now you're talking... such a gorgeous car.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 16:46 |
|
I though P4-5 was the first project of that type, and the Special Project department basically formed as a continuing effort with the team that built it, so that they could capitalize on other people besides Glickenhaus, like Clapton.... who also wanted one-off cars, and could afford to drop cubic dollars on having them custom built. P4-5 is built around the guts of an Enzo, a car that owners had to be invited to buy... I doubt Ferrari was too far away from re-building it at Glickenhaus' behest.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 16:49 |

For some reason I think "hamster pouches" when I see this. Not sure if I like what's visible here, but I'll withhold judgement for now.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 16:49 |

Pininfarina would seemingly do NOTHING to that extent without Ferrari's approval, considering how much of Pininfarina's business is under Ferrari contract. Especially after Ferrari Kyboshed the neo-Stratos project that was cut down from a privately owned F430 chassis... and how strictly Ferrari goes after replica cars, and famously restrict who has access to their top-end models, especially the F50/60/70, FXX, and GTO models, by invitation.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 20:09 |
|
Hi. :-)
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:07 |

Ferrari took their time to realize that an official re-body-and-charge-more program would be a profitable business venture for them. P4/5 was not the first special bodied Ferrari, quite a few came before including all of the Sultan of Brunei's one-off's, which were coachbuilt by Pininfarina on top of existing Ferrari models. There was also the 575GTZ, a Zagato rebody of a 575 Maranello, built as an hommage to the 250 GT Zagato coupés of the past, which were built on 250 TdF chassis. Incidentally it is coming up for auction soon.
The creation of P4/5 is extensively documented on the web thanks to Jim's generous sharing of everything about the cars he owns. The story was that there was one last unsold Enzo that he offered to buy, and proceeded to ask Andrea Pininfarina if they could improve the car and re-body it with a design that was reminiscent of the P3/4 and 412P cars he owns and loves. The rest is well documented history.
The first official SP project car was made for a Japanese customer and based off a 430. It is appropriately named SP1, although Clapton's SP12 proves that they do not name these cars consecutively. There are quite a few that have not been made public.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:08 |
|
Not true. Glickenhaus' car predates the SP program. Also, Ferrari trademarks these names for a reason. They are not prototype names, for the most part. Witness Eric Clapton's SP12 EC, and of course the SP1 and SP Arya.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:10 |
|
Well in that case, I stand corrected. Thanks for the info!
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:16 |
|
Though they are weary of pissing Ferrari off too much, Pininfarina will absolutely continue to work on creating one off's based on any type of car a customer will bring them. Whether these cars will be badged Ferrari (if they are based on one) is a different matter. The New Stratos project could go ahead, if there were enough people willing to pay how much it cost to make one. Ferrari wasn't happy about it, but there was nothing they could legally do, if the cars weren't badged Ferrari. In the end it didn't work out, as not enough people wanted to fork over the money to make Pininfarina actually carry out the modifications to the cars in spite of what Luca & Ferrari said they thought about it. I was told this by Jim Glickenhaus in person, who is very friendly with the gentleman who comissioned the New Stratos, and who as you know has dealt with Pininfarina extensively in the creation of his own one-off.

I'm conflicted.
I think both drive great.
The 430 still has that 'kick' to it. Its pretty brutal in a way that the 458 with the DCT wouldn't manage. It just feels more visceral.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:50 |
|
I agree especially the Scuderia with its single clutch transmission.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 22:47 |

Personally I think 458 Speciale should be the standard 458, and a complete ripped-off and caged(or optionally caged) 458 shall be called something like Speciale or Scuderia.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 23:43 |

Interesting information. Thanks to you and Jim Glickenhaus (I saw his comment here, too, or at least someone using his user name) for sharing information. Always good to hear things closer to the source.
I wish the new Stratos would go ahead... it is such a great design, even better than the original. Actually, I wish it were a shell made available to install on a mid-engined platform of the constructor's choice. FFR's 818 chassis, with a WRX STI engine, or a turbocharged EG33 flat 6, under that gorgeous bodywork... would be fantastic... and possibly even attainable. Otherwise some other mid-engined transverse V6 space-frame like the original Lancia Stratos...
I am in some ways impressed by these mega-dollar historically interesting one-off Ferraris... but I doubt I'll even ever set eyes on a real one, let alone sit in, ride in, or drive one, let alone own one. It might be nice to actually consider something within reach of a fiscally responsible working professional on a roughly average salary.

What's so special about the 612 Kappa? I see a different hood and a roof panel with solar modules, but apart from that, it looks rather stock. Still a beautiful car, the 612 is generally underrated in my opinion.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 12:48 |

"Easily the most identifiable trait of the new 612 K is the much more pronounced hood scoop and its tiny accent that reveals an all-aluminum body. Once that catches the viewer's eye, other more subtle features including Enzo-like rear taillights, extra wide air front wheel extractors, a unique sunroof and chromed headlights show just how thorough Pininfarina can be. In fact, the Kappa has been totally rebodied.
Inside, the 612 K has the familiar 612 interior and a new sunroof that offers an increased feeling of space. It uses the same technology found in the 575 SuperAmerica which uses photovoltaic cells to vary the amount of transparency in the glass, ranging from completely clear to opaque." -Supercars.net
I had to look it up, because I didn't really know. But hey, photovoltaic cells, which is a huge nod to the recent Superamericas.
